Inflation and Interest Rates

Inflation continues to rise, with February inflation reported at 17.33% year-on-year after 16.47% y/y in January, and food inflation at 21.79% y/y. Policy makers believe that structural issues are the core problem, but we sense that they include market interest rates in the mix when it comes to considering all the drivers of inflation.

MTN Nigeria Q4 2020 Result Review: Shares Looking Compelling Post Sell-off

MTN Nigeria's (MTNN) Q4 '20 results showed that the earnings recovery which started in Q3 '20 carried on into the final quarter of the year. We note the significant improvement in segment trends, particularly voice revenue which grew 11% y/y during the quarter (7% y/y Q3 '20), after declining y/y in Q2 because of the knock-on effects of the pandemic.

US $1.9tn Stimulus... Positive for Nigeria?

On 6th March 2021, Joe Biden signed a $1.9tn COVID-19 relief bill (the 3rd major stimulus package passed in the U.S. since the start of the pandemic). The bill aims to act as a catalyst to spur U.S economic recovery to pre-pandemic levels by 2022. Due to the U.S economic influence globally (it accounts for 20% of global demand,) the stimulus program could also spur global economic growth.
