Ladies and Gentlemen
On behalf of the Board of Governors and Secretariat of PEARL Awards Nigeria, it is my singular honour and privilege to thank you all and welcome you once again to today’s PEARL Awards 20th anniversary flag- off/ World Press Conference that formally flags off activities for the 2015 PEARL Awards Nite.
This event is indeed a unique one as it provides the opportunity for us to place at the public domain our milestone contribution to the growth of our capital market over the past 20 years and unfold activities towards the imminent event.
While we give God all the glory for the inspiration and his guidance over the years, we reaffirm our total commitment towards the development of the Nigerian Capital Market through our modest initiative and place on record our appreciation of your overwhelming support as our partners in progress over the past 2 decades.
As you are all aware, the PEARL Awards is the only Award in this part of the world that identifies and rewards Performance, Earnings and Returns Leadership by companies quoted on the Stock Exchange, using empirical and clearly defined criteria and methodology. The Awards process is based on verifiable facts and figures assessed utilizing credible and acceptable parameters and tools of data evaluation.
This is the uniqueness of the Awards which was instituted in 1995 and endorsed by the apex Capital Market regulatory authority, Securities & Exchange Commission in 2003 as earlier indicated in our score card. This year therefore marks, with your support and partnership, 20 years of meritorious service to the capital market, the national economy and indeed to our father land.
As widely acknowledged by capital market stakeholders including quoted companies, Stockbrokers, Registrars, Shareholders Associations, Media executives among others, for its objectivity and impartiality over the years, the PEARL Awards remains committed to objectivity, fairness and absolute neutrality in rewarding outstanding quoted companies based on actual performance as reflected in their audited annual reports and other relevant documents sourced from the Stock Exchange.
Today, as we celebrate the spirit of resilience that has kept the Awards Project going over the years, in spite of the vagaries of the economy both locally and globally, we are delighted to unveil our plan of activities culminating in the hosting of the 2015 PEARL Awards Nite which also marks the 20th anniversary of the Project.
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of our highly dedicated, committed and supportive Board of Governors, it is my pleasure to formally announce a series of activities to culminate in the holding of our 20th Anniversary edition. The following have been lined up by the Awards Secretariat in conjunction with the Central Working Committee as approved by the Board.
- PEARL Stockbroking Firm of the Year Award
- PEARL Capital Market Registrar of the Year Award.
- PEARL Issuing House of the Year Award.
As a part of the activities between now and the Awards event, thank you and Courtesy visits would be paid to supportive media organizations, notable institutions and major stakeholders that have contributed towards making the PEARL Awards the success story it has been over the past decades.
In line with our tradition, I am pleased to formally announce that this year’s PEARL Awards Nite will hold on Sunday November 29, 2015 at the Expo Hall of the prestigious Eko Hotel & Towers, Victoria Island, Lagos. As stated earlier, this year’s edition promises to be an outstanding night of glamour, funfair and celebration of excellence.
Beyond the experience of previous editions, this year’s 20th Anniversary is being packaged to stand out with unusual and exciting side attractions, not excluding the usual red carpet reception, high class executive networking opportunities, memorable entertainment classics that would linger on for a long time in the minds of our esteemed guests among others.
This year’s Awards, like previous ones will be determined utilizing key ten of the globally acceptable parameters which include Turnover Growth; Return on Equity; Earnings Yield; Share Price Appreciation; Dividend Cover; Profit Margin Ratio etc
In addition to the newly created Awards in the Special Honorary Awards category, the 2015 PEARL Awards would feature the three main competitive categories namely the Sectoral Leadership Awards, Market Excellence Awards and the Overall Highest Award category – The PEARL of the Nigerian Stock Market.
Gentlemen of the Press, as usual, the four Awards in the Special Honorary Awards category introduced in the year 2000 to reward and honour individuals and media institutions that contributed remarkably to Capital Market development in Nigeria will be featured. However, with the introduction of 4 new Awards as stated earlier, the Awards in this category have now increased to 8.
It is worthy to note that a very formidable Central Working Committee, whose Media and Publicity Sub-Committee put together this Flag Off/Press Conference, has been constituted. The Committee is desirous to make this year’s Awards more successful than previous editions in all ramifications.
Distinguished Ladies and gentlemen, permit me to state that the PEARL Awards is appreciative of the concerted efforts being made by the new Management of the Securities and Exchange Commission to critically grow the Nigerian Capital Market and the nation’s economy.
It is pertinent to state that investors’ confidence must be fully restored to enhance the growth and development of the capital market. To this end, active investor sensitization and education is essential to further restore investors’ confidence in the market.
We are of the opinion that the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Nigerian Stock Exchange need to do more towards investors’ enlightenment in order to rebuild confidence in the market.
On our part, PEARL Awards Nigeria remains committed to partnering with the regulatory authorities and other stakeholders towards achieving sustainability, growth and deepening of the market.
While we once again appreciate the support of the media over the years, we count on your sustained support as formidable partners as we march forward towards actualizing the plans towards a remarkable 20th Anniversary edition by giving these activities and the anniversary edition of the PEARL Awards the greatest publicity possible through your various media.
To the heads of Corporate Communications of quoted companies here present, we very much value your partnership and belief in the PEARL Awards initiative over the past 2 decades. The confidence reposed in us by your various organizations underscore the spirit of excellence and resilience that has seen the Awards Project through the challenges overcome and successes attained over the past 2 decades. We very much look forward to the continuous partnership towards enhancing healthy competitiveness on the Nigerian capital market.
To our esteemed Board members, we eternally appreciate your unalloyed passion, commitment and dedication to this noble initiative.
Distinguished Ladies and gentlemen, once again, we are very pleased to have you honour our invitation to attend this 20th anniversary flag-off / World Press Conference. On behalf of the PEARL Awards Board of Governors, the Awards Secretariat, and the 2015 Central Working Committee, I thank you very much for your rapt attention.
