Rivers State is one of the resource blessed states in Nigeria, and in the federal allocations principle is in the first five states that receives a huge subvention, hence a ‘juicy’ spot for leadership.

Looking from a historical perspective, the following have served as Civilian Governors of the State namely; Chief Melford Okilo)(second republic), Mr Rufus Ada-George(third republic), Dr Peter Odili (fourth republic) and presently Rt. Hon Rotimi Amaechi(fourth republic).

The 2015 general elections will mark another critical phase and defining moment for the State as the February 28th 2015 date draws near.

Key contenders for this election are Mr Dakuku Peterside the ‘protégé’ of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of the All Progressives Congress(APC) and Hon Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

Looking at the background of the candidates, Hon Nyesom Wike ( indigene of Ikwerre,) has robust and solid background as a lawyer and administrator who served as Chairman of Obio/Akpor L.G.A under the Amaechi government, before the relationship went sour.

His appointment as Minister for Education also gave him further exposure in leadership and administration, which he can replicate at the Governorship level.

For Mr. Peterside (indigene of Opobo), Faustinus Nwaorgu in his profiling describes him as an astute administrator and dynamic politician, who served as the Special Assistant to Governor Odili, Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro L.G.A, Commissioner for Works and House of Representatives member.

In terms of plans and leadership framework, Hon Nyesom Wike is poised to ensure the State has a harmonious relationship with the federal government, promote people-oriented programs and ensure the inclusive economic growth through integrated infrastructure plan amongst others.

Mr Dakuku Peterside who was once the President of the National Union Rivers State Students (NURSS), is committed to implementing a comprehensive poverty alleviation scheme which will be driven through a strategic social and human capital development programme.

He is also determined to create the enabling environment for small businesses to grow as well as strengthen public-private partnership that will tackle youth unemployment.

Nyesom Wike 47, a lawyer by training will be seeking to return the state back to PDP control, while Dakuku Peterside 44, a management expert and public policy analyst will be looking to consolidate the APC dominance.

It will be a grand political battle, but there are fears of violence on the election day as the build up has been marred by two incidents of explosions and clashes between APC and PDP supporters.

The onus will be on INEC and the security agencies, to guarantee a credible election.
