#EndSARS:The Quest For Reforms And Effective Policing In Nigeria
The quest for effective reforms and policing in Nigeria came to the fore as youths across major cities in Nigeria, took to the streets to protest the excesses of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, FSARS which has been manifest in the areas of brutality, extortion, illegal detentions, rape and even the murder of innocent Nigerians and suspects in custody.
At the Lagos State House, Alausa the protests which entered its third day brought together young people, social media influencers and celebrities, who in unison demanded that the Federal Government should proscribe the FSARS unit in the Nigerian Police Force with support from the States.
The Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat who came out to address the youth faced difficulties convincing them to accept a reform and not a disbandment of the FSARS, despite sharing his personal experience with the unit four years ago.
Due to the failure of the current administration and the office of the Inspector General of Police, IGP to follow through with a reform of the FSARS operations as promised (two years ago) the youth said the only option they want is the disbandment of the unit in the Nigerian Police Force.
