Economy and Politics: 22 Years of Democracy: Electoral Reforms, Decentralization Of Powers Key for Nigeria - Pat Utomi
This edition of the Economy and Politics show features Professor Pat Utomi a political economist and founder of the Center for Values and Leadership, as he speaks on "Towards A Sustainable Democracy In Nigeria".
He believed that as Nigeria's 1999 constitution goes through a review for possible amendments since the return to a fourth republic, reforming the electoral process and ensuring a robust process of fiscal transfer from the federal to state and local governments are key areas that should be addressed.
He believed that electoral reforms will improve the legitimacy of political office holders in the country, and make them more accountable to the citizens because they emerged through a transparent process.
The scholar decried the fact that the nation has experienced the challenge of political actors, who have allowed their private interests to override a fair and equitable political system.
