Why The FG Should Reconsider Its Border Closure Policy - Adesola Borokinni

The Current Border Closure Policy of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari should be reconsidered with a view to taking steps and strategies that will boost competitiveness and industrialization in the country.

Mr. Adesola Borokinni an economist with Proshare Nigeria disclosed this on the "Economy and Politics" show anchored by Ottoabasi Abasiekong.

He called for broader stakeholder engagement with businesses and trade groups on the impact of the border closure and how the Import and Export led industries can be supported.

The economist called for an open door policy for businesses to apply for concessions to carry out their activities with permits, through applications like what BUA Cement and Dangote Cement companies.

According to him Nigeria needs clarity on its border closure policy with a short and long-term strategy and the need to leverage its comparative advantage like Singapore, Japan, China etc. achieved.

He also stressed Nigeria should revisit the policy as it is not in tandem with the principles of the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement, AFCFTA which the country is a signatory to.
