Institutions in Nigeria Should Work for The Interest of Citizens, Not the President - Kolawole Oluwadare

The progress of Nigeria's Democracy and political-economic system hinges on the strength of the institutions, who should work for the interest of the citizens and the entire nation, as against loyalty to whoever is the President.

Mr. Kolawole Oluwadare, the Deputy Director, Socio-Economic Rights Accountability Project (SERAP) made this point as the guest on the "Economy and Politics" show anchored by Ottoabasi Abasiekong.

He acknowledged the fact that despite over two decades of achieving an uninterrupted democratic dispensation, Nigeria has not made significant progress in the place of institutions across the three arms of government (Judiciary, Executive and Legislature) that are accountable to the citizens and committed to transparency in their activities.

The SERAP Deputy Director who lauded the efforts at reviewing the 1999 Constitution, supported the call for the separation of the office of the Attorney General from that of the Minister of Justice, because the former will serve the interests of the citizens executing and carrying out the necessary investigations without any apron string attached to the government.

Speaking further he decried the fact that from the 2017 Auditor General of the Federation's over N800bn has been unaccounted for by Ministries, Department and Agencies, MDAs in the country.
