Millennial Talk: The Business of Entertainment & Opportunities for Youth in Nigeria
Nigeria is home to a vibrant and dynamic entertainment/creative industry, with amazing talents and grammy award winners like Burna Boy and Wizkid.
The music industry for example is a major contributor to youth employment and engagement, that is creating value for the economy alongside the value-chain of other sub-sectors from movie production, creative arts, comedy, publishing, R&D, software, TV and radio, digital media(social media) and video games amongst others.
GDP figures show that the arts, entertainment, and recreation sector grew by 1.89% in Q2 2021 from -0.47% in Q1 2021. Nigeria's music revenue grew from $26m in 2014 to $34million in 2018, and by 2023 the revenue is expected to amount to $44m.
The statistics from these studies reveal that the music and entertainment industry possesses both the capacity to support millions of youths and generate considerable revenue for the economy.
