Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and Commitments from various stakeholders are ways Nigeria can achieve its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target by year 2030. Folashade Ambrose-Medebem the Director, Communications, Public Affairs and Sustainable Development, Lafarge Africa Plc made this point in a discourse on "Sustainable Development Goals and the Green Economy".

She described the period 2020-2030 as a decade of action to achieve sustainable development and the 17 goals outlined by the United Nations in collaboration with partners.

According to her the global economy has shifted to the era that companies and organizations, should reposition their operations with sustainability at the core.

She said Lafarge Africa under Lafarge Holcim its parent company has given top priority to reducing CO2 emissions, in its operations and as a private sector player has supported efforts towards sustainable development in Nigeria and globally.

Speaking further she believed that commercializing sustainable development as a product is one avenue for incentivizing private sector players, to adopt measures on sustainability in their business strategy.

From the Lafarge experience she said that its initiative "Geocycle" has emerged  the first full-fledged and largest waste management service provider in Nigeria, catalyzing the co-processing activities and recycling waste effectively.

She added that Lafarge has served as off-takers for other multinational corporations in the co-processing of waste, enabling a clean and sustainable environment in the nation.

On the ESG adoption she said it was important to encourage companies to disclose their support to sustainability and areas of bio-diversity.

The ESG according to her emphasizes people, profit and planet in the activities of businesses and organizations across the globe.

She lauded the Nigeria Exchange Group for catalyzing developments around the green economy through the sustainability reports for quoted companies, which Lafarge Africa is an active participant.

On key areas that can be explored to strengthen efforts in achieving sustainable development and inclusive growth, she highlighted the following areas;

  • Partnerships-Increased Collaboration between Public and Private sectors
  • Training- Capacity and Skills development
  • Awareness- Increased sensitization campaigns and publicity
  • Communication- Improving interaction amongst all key stakeholders

The sustainability expert also harped on the need for enabling policies on waste management and recycling, from the federal to sub-national governments in the country.

Policy makers, business leaders and analysts believe coordination and partnership between the public and private sector on implementing the SDGs, will provide immense opportunities for achieving scale in areas like Education/Human Capital Development, reducing poverty and accelerating a sustainable environment.
