Chain Reactions a public relations firm in partnership with global PR giant Edelman, hosted stakeholders to the 2017 Trust Barometer Report presentation in Lagos.
The presentation which is the 17th for Edelman PR since inception, is the first to be presented in Nigeria and focused on the Trust index of citizens in over 20 countries from its annual survey focusing on the government, media, business and Non-Governmental Organizations.
In his opening remarks the MD/CEO of Chain Reactions PR Nigeria Mr Israel Opayemi described the annual report as an opportunity to assess how the government, media, business and NGOs have fared in the eyes of the populace.
Opayemi noted that the Edelman 2017 Trust Barometer report revealed that there was a deficiency of trust in the government, media, business and NGOs.
The Chain Reactions PR boss said with the maiden edition report presented in Nigeria, the plan ahead was to also incorporate the “Nigerian Trust Index” for the next Edelman Trust Barometer report.
Chairman of First Bank Nigeria Mrs Ibukun Awosika in her video message, called for concerted efforts from Nigerians to build trust in the nation. She said “When there is no trust, the right kind of people runaway from government”.
Delivering the presentation with the theme “Trust in Crisis” Mr Jordan Rittenberry CEO Edelman South Africa asserted that trust is in global crisis, which should be a major concern for institutions.
According to him there has been a trust gap between the elite and mass population, which has led to the rise of populism in countries like the United Kingdom and United States of America.
Rittenberry said “Our report showed the mass population are rejecting established authority”, while he noted that the traditional media showed its deepest decline in trust in the 2017 report.
He noted that from the Industry level, citizen trusted the technology space more while businesses got a fair assessment, compared to the government, media and NGOs who were on a low rating in the Trust Index.
On the way forward for the government, media, businesses and NGOs he said five steps were key; leveraging peer networks, exploring cross-channel communications, demonstrating benefits to local communities, empowering employees and being authentic at all times.
