World Environment Day (W.E.D.) is celebrated annually on the 5th of June and is the United Nations' principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment. It first held in 1974 and has been a platform for raising awareness on environmental issues such as marine pollution, human overpopulation, global warming, sustainable consumption, and wildlife crime.

The World Environment Day is a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually. Each year, the program has provided a theme and forum for businesses, non-government organizations, communities, governments and celebrities to advocate environmental causes.

In celebration of the day, Sterling One Foundation partnered with Proshare, African CleanUp Initiative, Rite Foods Nigeria, Nigerian Donors and Bonnie Biodegradable Nigeria for her 'Beach Clean Up' Initiative at Eleko Beach on Saturday, June 5th, 2021 to mark the 2021 World Environment Day with the theme "Ecosystem Restoration".

The event brought together individuals from various organizations who participated in the clean-up exercise to keep Eleko beach and its environs clean.

Speaking on the event, the CEO of Sterling One Foundation, Peju Ibekwe said the Foundation believes that it is nearly impossible to live a healthy life, conduct business and create wealth amidst waste or in a toxic environment. And truly, without clean air, water, land and energy, our collective humanity is endangered. To safeguard humanity, it therefore becomes necessary for all - the private sector, civil society groups, government and individuals - to heed the clarion call to keep our environment orderly and functional through sustainable living actions and regular cleaning.

Speaking further she explained that some of the strategic environment sites like the beach fronts was selected for the interventions, adding that the activities started with Alpha beach, while Eleko is the second one that has experienced the intervention.

She noted that the foundation is committed to providing water and sanitation for communities across the nation.

The Baale of Eleko, Chief Gbadebo Fatai Olabiya who participated at the event commended Sterling One Foundation, Proshare and other partners for their support and called on the Lagos State government, to give top priority to the development and transformation of the 'Eleko Beach' into a strategic tourism destination.

Alexander Akhigbe of the African Clean Up Initiative in his remarks stressed that the Eleko community will continue with the cleaning exercise of the beach for the rest of the year.

He said recycling from the environment can create business opportunities for the community which will translate to economic empowerment.

Akhigbe added that the essence of the initiative was to provide a platform for promoting "Waste to Wealth" which through the partnership  with "Africa Clean Up Initiative" will lead to a huge  socio-economic impact on the people through recycling in exchange for education, health and hygiene.

Providing further insight on waste management and environmental preservation, Taiwo Adewole the Executive Director, Recycle Point believed that activities like planting trees, generating less waste, beach cleanup restoration and a clean drainage where part of the important components for a sustainable environment.

He cited Lagos state as an example of a sub-national that has provided enabling laws and regulations on effective waste management and the ecosystem restoration.

Despite the challenging macro-economic environment Taiwo Adewole believed that activities in the clean environment space can create employment opportunities for citizens.
