Being Text of the Address by The President/CEO, Pearl Awards Nigeria, Mr. Tayo Orekoya, FCA; at the 2019 Pearl Awards Nite Press Conference today, October 22, 2019 at the Pearl Awards Secretariat, CITC House, Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria.

The Chairman, PEARL Awards Nigeria,

Distinguished Members, PEARL Awards Board of Governors,

Distinguished Partners from the Media,

Distinguished Members of the 2019 PEARL Awards CWC here present,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

On behalf of the Board of Governors and Secretariat of PEARL Awards Nigeria, I have the singular honour and privilege of welcoming you all to today' Press Conference on the 2019 PEARL Awards Nite. Today's event is the second time this year that our media friends would be invited for PEARL Awards related activities in recent time.

It would be recalled that early last month, we held a media briefing to formally announce plans to host the 2019 edition of the PEARL Awards Nite. I wish to register our appreciation to the media for the premium coverage given to the event.

Please permit me to start by thanking you all for honouring our invitation today, despite your very busy schedules. We really appreciate your support and commitment over the years, and continue to count on your usual sustained cooperation even as we celebrate together yet another edition in our quest to recognize & reward outstanding corporate performance in continuation of our selfless service to the Nigerian Capital Market over the past twenty four (24) years.

It is important to reiterate that PEARL Awards Nigeria, instituted in 1995, has over the years organized with finesse the Awards Nite annually as part of our contribution to the growth of the capital market in Nigeria. Since inception and to date, we have, and continue to be guided by the principles of fairness, transparency and objectivity in our selection process while our scientific approach in determining nominee and ultimate winning companies remain incontrovertible.

We are not unaware of the huge responsibility placed on our shoulders as a result of the reliability on our sense of judgment by investors and shareholders alike, but are determined to continue to play our part with every sense of responsibility towards achieving the objectives for which PEARL Awards was instituted.

The performance of our capital market is still relatively unstable. Indeed, the instability has continued to have its negative impact on investors' confidence. Specifically, losses sustained in terms of value depletion by stakeholders in the equities market of our Stock Exchange this year alone is mind boggling. We implore major stakeholders including Government, regulatory authorities, market players and indeed all stakeholders to pointedly address the challenges occasioning the dwindling performance of our Stock Exchange. The stakeholders of our capital market in collaboration with the government must continue to strive towards market stability, sustainability and growth.

Regulators in particular must intensify efforts towards utilizing innovative approaches towards engendering restoration of investors' confidence in the market and deepening the market for enhanced development. As partner in progress with capital market regulators, our focus is to continue to promote healthy competitiveness, reward outstanding performance, thereby enhancing vibrancy of the market.

We are convinced that this will go a long way to compliment the efforts of the regulatory authorities towards returning the market to the desired path of sustainable growth and market development.

It is in the light of the above that our esteemed Board of Governors and the Secretariat of the PEARL Awards Nigeria have deemed it necessary to update you on activities towards rewarding deserving quoted companies this year for outstanding performances as we have done annually in the past years.

On behalf of the Governing Board & Secretariat of PEARL Awards Nigeria, I am pleased to announce that the 2019 PEARL Awards will hold on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The theme for this 2019 edition is "Celebrating Sustainable Leadership & Resilience". This is in realization of the need to recognize and reward companies that, in spite of the challenges in the operating environment, have continue to show resilience and sustain their leadership in the capital market, and therefore to be deserved to be honoured.

Please permit me to reiterate that the PEARL Awards remains the only Awards in this part of the world that identifies and rewards quoted companies based on empirical data. This is the uniqueness of the Awards, which earned it the endorsement by the apex capital market regulatory authority, the Securities & Exchange Commission in 2003.

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, you may recall that in commemoration of its 20th anniversary in 2015, PEARL Awards expanded its scope beyond the quoted companies thereby recognizing other capital market players including Stockbroking Firms, Issuing Houses among others, for outstanding performance.

As we move to the 25th Anniversary edition of the Awards in year 2020, plans are afoot to comprehensively restructure the Awards to cover other market players including Registrars, Fund Managers and Portfolio Advisers. Details of other far reaching structural changes that would be implemented would be announced in due course, as part of efforts to sustain the impact, relevance and credibility of the Awards in our contribution to the vibrancy, growth and development of the Nigerian capital market.

For the 2019 PEARL Awards, recognitions, honours and Awards shall be in three main categories as listed below:

The 2019 Awards Nite, promises to be as glamorous as previous editions. The event is being packaged with special features and innovations to be a remarkable night of excellence and glamour, where captains of commerce and industries and major stakeholders of our economy will savour the joy of rewarding excellent operational performance of quoted companies and other capital market players in Nigeria.

The Nominees and ultimate Award winners in the Main Competitive Awards Category, as in recent past years were determined utilizing nine performance indices namely Turnover Growth; Return on Equity; Earnings Yield; Share Price Appreciation; Dividend Cover; Dividend Yield; Net Asset Ratio; Dividend Growth and Profit Margin Ratio.

Similarly, just like previous editions, in order to ensure fairness, objectivity and authenticity in its assessment, the Research and collation Sub-Committee, sourced the required data from the Annual Reports of quoted companies duly filed with the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Stock Exchange Daily Official lists for the year under consideration. The Report of the Research & Collation Sub-Committee was reviewed, verified and thereafter endorsed by the Board's Technical Committee, which subsequently presented same to the full Board for consideration and approval.

As indicated above, the 2019 PEARL Awards Main competitive category has 3 sub-categories namely the Sectoral Leadership Awards, which rewards a company for out-performing other companies within the same sector, based on aggregate points garnered from all the nine indices utilized for ranking.

The Market Excellence Awards, which is based on recognition of the entire market leadership in respect of each of the ranking indices, while the third sub-category is the Overall Highest Award - The PEARL of the Nigerian Stock Market.

Distinguished partners in the Media, I have the honour and privilege to inform you that having examined the reports of the Research & Collation Committee of the Awards Central Working Committee; reviewed and endorsed by the Technical Committee of the Board, the PEARL Awards Board of Governors has today considered and finally approved the Nominations & Awards Reports for the 2019 PEARL Awards.
