How Digital Transformation will Reshape Nigerian Organisations

The rise of digital technology will transform the organizational ecosystem in Nigeria through a change in processes, procedures and products. In a recent interview with WebTV, Mr. Jason Ikegwu, Associate Partner, Digital & Tech Phillips Consulting, gave a brief insight into how the emerging digital value chain will change Nigerian companies. 

Digital transformation according to Ikegwu is the use of data and technology to drive operational efficiency and improve corporate outcomes. 

Speaking on global trends, Mr Ikegwu said “If you check what’s happening around the world today, the changes and evolutions of where we live, how we work and what we do on a daily basis, gives an idea of how old paradigms are giving way to new visions and interpretations of reality, most of this rests on technology and its changing applications”. 

Ikegwu stressed that digital transformation is designed to expand the capacity of companies to deliver services to their customers, inspire employees,  optimize operations and more importantly  transform services or/and products. 

“Customers tastes are becoming sophisticated, they expect more to be delivered and to meet these challenges there is need for organizations improve their knowledge of the experiential desires of consumers or goods or users of services across industry touch points”, he said. 

Ikegwu argued that even fragile markets can leverage the advantages of digital transformation technology in economies like Nigeria. He said, “when you look around sectors from banking, health to education, you can see that there are expectations of value and this is wrapped in customer spending demand”. 

“It’s important for organizations to understand that at this point, there is need to meet the expectations of customers in terms of service or product value proposition by using digital technology as a means of meeting the visceral and mercurial expectations of customer bases with short attention span and low switching costs ”. 

He outlined three things that re critical in the conversation between organizational efficiency and digital transformation:

  • The People- To ensure that the employees understand what is expected of them and the value proposition they must meet.
  • Operating Model-The operating model must be agile and adaptable to changes in the evolving environment, to be able to adapt to the changing requirement of customers
  • Culture-The expectations of culture on how work will be done around organizations.

 

The Associate Partner believes that it is important that within the confines of the business space, appropriate models are applied especially for evolving markets.  

He asserted that Digital transformation has come to redefine operations and it is either a business is disrupted or face extinction. 

Ikegwu cited the example of Uber and its competitors and how they have taken over mainstream cab services today, especially in developing countries like Nigeria. “The future will center around technology, data, and digitalisation and for that to happen there is need for individuals and organizations to understand how to go about  technology implementation”. 

Should SMEs be concerned about cyber security exposures? 

In terms of implementation, he said  digital transformation begins by defining a strategy for it. “It can start small, it must be completed, so today it is not about the complexity, it is about the simplicity of improving what we do in employing data and employing technology to enhance and simplify operations in the work environment. Organizations need to understand that there is need to change, there is need to improve and there is need to innovate”. 

He also called for sensitization and  training on the flow of digital conversation which will allow people in organizations contribute meaningfully to the process. 

“Everyone in organizations need to be accountable, everyone needs to understand the training, the equipping, the conversation needs to come from every part of the organization and continue to the boardrooms and the shop floor. It has to be clear as a full organizational agenda” he said. 

He emphasized the need for a comprehensive framework that will see digital transformation as a key driver of the modern business.
