Jaiz Bank Plc (JAIZBANK), Japaul Oil and Maritime Services Plc (JAPAUL) and forty other equities traded below their nominal value at the Nigeria’s stock market as at the close of trading on Thursday, November 15, 2018.
The two firms joined the list of stocks struggling below 50 kobo despite emerging the top gainers for the day, while JAIZBANK led the gainers’ chart by appreciating by 7.50 percent to close at 43 kobo per share, JAPAUL followed with 5 percent increase to close at 21 kobo per share.
The forty-two (42) firms, which cut across all the sectors, represent 23.67 percent of all listed equities at bourse.
On Monday, January 29, 2018, the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) reviewed its nominal value benchmark for quoted companies from 50 kobo to 1 kobo, making investors of stocks, which had gone dormant owing to the minimum floor restriction, to resume trading. This is because, prior to the new price rule, the stocks could not drop below 50 kobo even if an equity investor wished to sell his assets at a lower price for financial, social or political goals.
Seven (7) stocks have been trading flat at 50 kobo since the beginning of the year owing to the regulatory suspension placed on the shares of five of the stocks including ASOSAVINGS, GNI, RESORTSAL, EVANSMED and OMATEK on July 5, 2017, while that of AFROMEDIA was suspended on April 9, 2018.

ACADEMY, which is also one of the inactive stocks trading at their nominal value, was put on hold on October 4, 2017 but the suspension was lifted on November 7, 2018 after it filed its interim accounts for the period ended September 2018.
Of the forty (42) stocks, Twenty (20) are listed in the Financial Services sector, making it the sector with the largest number of stocks trading below 50 kobo. It was trailed by the Services sector with five (5) stocks; Oil & Gas, four (4); Consumer Goods, three (3); ICT, two (2), Natural Resources, two (2); Conglomerates, two (2); Health, one (1); Industrial Goods, one (1); Construction/Real Estate, one (1) and Agriculture, one (1).
