The Equity Market closed the month of October 2015 in negative territory as the NSEASI recorded -6.53% decline after a month of positive outlook; as market YTD performance dipped further to stand at -15.81%.
While the reasons for these volatility appears consistent with macro-economic indicators, market operators and stakeholders held a number of consultations, conferences and meetings to explore and discuss various options for the capital market and the economy, including the Nigerian Economic Summit Meeting #21.
The Nigerian Debt Capital Market Workshop organized by FMDQ OTC Plc was another of such fora where issues such as “Accessing Debt Capital markets for Infrastructure Financing” were discussed. This is expected to be a very viable option for governments at all level to access funds for pressing projects in the face dwindling oil revenues.
Also, the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers held its 19th Annual Stockbrokers’ Conference & Investiture of Fellows/Induction of Associates with the theme “Entrepreneurship and The Capital Market: Fast Tracking a New Economy for Africa.”
The well attended and managed stockbrokers’ conference also took a look at issues around how the capital market can serve as a boost for entrepreneurship, drawing parallels from other climes and its market growth imperative.
The Annual Investors Conference organized by FBN Capital Ltd, now FBNQuest, was another of such fora with a focus on “Reinventing the Nigerian Economy: Beyond the Rhetorics”. The guest speaker, Daniel Altman, discussed the current economic challenges facing Nigeria and also presented several policies options Nigeria could adopt to make progress.
