Nigeria has joined the global information and communications technology (ICT) community in experiencing first hand, high speed wireless broadband service using pre-mobile WiMAX 802.16e equipment.

Introduced by broadband internet service provider (ISP), Direct On PC Limited (DOPC) in collaboration with Navini Networks of Texas, USA, the new service will provide users plug and play broadband wireless access solutions with the most experience in commercial deployments.

DOPC is the leading ISP in West Africa and is deploying in the 2.3 GHz band with plans to roll out services in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt to cover the cities from end to end. The service will entail customised Internet and intranet plans for the banking sector, corporate, oil and gas, educational institutes, government sector, etc. It will offer excellent solutions for the Home and Small Medium Enterprises (SME) segment as well.

\"Our goal is to provide broadband wireless Internet and intranet services to the principal citizens of Nigeria - Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. We expect to have over 15,000 users in 2007 and as we move into 802.16e WiMAX, we expect mobility to change the face of broadband services and mobile telephony. We are rolling out a state-of-the-art platform with pre-paid and post-paid services, backed with a full 24x7/365 help desk. We are the first company in Nigeria to launch this platform in the 2.3 GHz frequency. The 2.3 GHz frequency has vast advantages over other frequencies and customers will soon realise this once the platform is launched,\" said Munish Sharma, managing director of DOPC.

Anurag Garg, head of Operations said, \"We have customers, corporate as well as individuals, who are already very excited about this service. A simple plug and play modem or a PCMCIA card is all that is needed to self install and get started. Another unique feature is that for the first time in Nigeria, customers will be able to use the same account in multiple cities, that is, Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, hence they will carry the Internet with them. That\'s personal broadband. We have started taking bookings for the first phase and are overwhelmed with the response. I am confident that we are bringing a new era once again to the broadband market in Nigeria.\"

The deployment features Navini\'s RipwaveTM MX platform that is designed for seamless evolution to 802.16e mobile WiMAX with Navini\'s Smart WiMAXTM solution. Smart WiMAXTM combines the Smart Beamforming technology currently in commercial service around the world, with beamformed MIMO, which can double the data throughput for WiMAX subscribers.

\"Direct On Pc is our largest customer in West Africa and the only company bringing personal broadband to multiple cities in Nigeria,\" said Roger Dorf, Navini\'s president and CEO. \"Mobile WiMAX is the right technology at the right time to deliver personal broadband for both consumers and business users,\" he added.
