First Bank Launches Chat Banking on WhatsApp, to Bolster Social Banking

Nigeria’s Oldest Banking Group, First Bank as part of its commitment to creating a unique digital experience for its customers launched its chat banking on the WhatsApp platform. 

At its digital lab in Yaba, the bank hosted a media parley to give further insight into the launch and how it will improve financial services delivery. 

The MD/CEO of First Bank Nigeria Dr. Adesola Adeduntan in his remarks said as leading banking services provider, the bank was keen on offering excellent financial services to its esteemed customers and devising new ways of effectively and efficiently meeting customers’ financial needs. 

According to him “We have optimised our digital banking offerings to ensure ease of banking and convenience; our FirstMobile app, Firstonline, FirstMonie and USSD banking are some of the channels we have put in place to make this happen”.  

Speaking further he said “FirstBank Chat Banking on WhatsApp is another significant milestone in our mission to provide convenient and fast payment solutions to our customers. It is one of the ways FirstBank puts You First and enables you stay connected with your contacts, loved ones, friends and finances all on the GO whilst you chat with them because at FirstBank we are driven to bolster relationships on all fronts anywhere and anytime”. 

He assured that the Chat banking WhatsApp platform was secure, accessible and convenient, enabling customers to carry out basic banking transactions such as inter and intra bank funds transfer, pay bills, buy airtime, buy data and checking account balance. 

The Head E-Business of First Bank Mr Chuma Ezirim shared that from the onboarding process on the Whatsapp platform to carrying out transactions, the service  was secure for customers. 

Ezirim said the Chat banking offered customers options to transact on the digital channels of First bank, with the confidentiality of their information guaranteed. 

Mr Ezirim also stated that the bank had 7.5 million customers on its digital banking service, who have carried out 12.5 million transactions worth over N20bn. 

The bank through the Chat banking launch and other digital banking services, according to Ezirim was targeting 40million unbanked Nigerians to provide financial services to them. 

In an interview the Deputy Managing Director of First Bank Mr Gbenga Shobo said with the Chat banking on the WhatsApp platform, the bank was conscious Nigeria’s demography dominated by a young population under 30, that are mobile and socially active. 

Through the service, you will be able to generate a WhatsApp banking PIN and all your transaction authentications will be done using a safe link, thereby ensuring the security of your banking details.
