Yakubu is new INEC Chairman

Africa’s largest democracy Nigeria now has a new Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) Chairman, He is Professor Mahmood Yakubu who was appointed today by President Muhammadu Buhari at the end of the National council of state meeting in Abuja.

 

Until his appointment Mrs Amina Zakari was serving in the Acting capacity as Chairman for the electoral body.

 

Yakubu is a Professor of History and International relations and  the former Executive secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETF).

 

Born in 1962, Bauchi Prof Yakubu was a recipient of the Bauchi State Government Scholarship programme to study at both Cambridge and Oxford Universities in England,UK.

 

A first class product of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Prof Yakubu was also a member of the 2014 National conference in Abuja.

 

He will be saddled with the responsibility of leveraging on the credible elections scorecard by his predecessor Prof Attahiru Jega.

 

His first test  on the job, will come in the next two months when he will be conducting the gubernatorial elections in Kogi (November 21st)and Bayelsa (Deecember 5th) States respectively.
