Peter Ayodele Fayose, The Oshokomole 1 of Yorubaland (born 15 November 1960) is a Nigerian politician and the current Governor of Ekiti State.

Regarded as one of the outspoken politicians in the  fourth republic and dispensation, Fayose has been synonymous with political activism ad is one of the dogged politicians of south-western extract.

A unusual but core grassroot politician Fayose can be simply described as one of the political gladiators in the Nigerian socio-political space.

He has the political record of defeating two incumbent civilian Governors in Nigeria. He had the first experience (2003-2007) edging Otunba Niyi Adebayo and returned back 2014 to defeat the incumbent Goveror John Kayode Fayemi to win the Gubernatorial elections.

Fayose  grew up in Oyo State where he attended Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo and obtained his WASC certificate (1979), he was admitted for a Higher National Diploma (HND) Programme in Biological Sciences/Applied Medical/Biology by The Polytechnic, Ibadan and graduated in 1987. While doing his National Youth Service Corps program at Pepsi Nigeria Limited, Ibadan, he was engaged in installation, maintenance and servicing of medical and laboratory equipment.

After his youth service, Fayose traveled out of the country during which he was exposed to a broad spectrum of business that guided his life later.

To his credit, he conducted one of the most sought after medical outreach programmes during his political campaign in 2001.

Fayose became the second governor of Ekiti on 29 May 2003 after defeating the then incumbent Governor Niyi Adebayo in the governorship elections. Fayose could not complete his tenure as a result of an impeachment on 16 October 2006.

During the 2014 Governorship election in Ekiti State, Peter Ayodele Fayose was again the PDP nominee. He won the election and was declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission as the new Governor of Ekiti State; he was inaugurated on 16 Oct 2014.

His clout and political capacity in the country came to limelight, when he delivered Ekiti for Peoples Democratic Party despite the sweeping victory of the All Progressive Congress, in other states in the South-West region.

Though he is a sitting governor, Fayose has publicly declared his intentions to run for president in 2019. Though his party, The People Democratic Party, PDP has admonished the Governor, against his ambition to be the party’s presidential candidate in 2019.

He is a fierce and strong critic of the Buhari administration , always in the news space highlighting perceived areas of under-performance of the APC led government.

Fayose is a strong advocate of restructuring and has in partnership with the likes of Femi-Fani Kayode challenged the Buhari government on several policy decisions.

As Governor of Ekiti State, Fayose has led the dualisation of key roads in some local government headquarters such as Irepodun/Ifelodun, Ikere, Emure, Ise, Omuo and Efon-Alaaye and reconstruction and rehabilitation Intra city roads to ensure a widespread rural integration development across the State.

He has shown leadership in improving the welfare, health insurance, agriculture, empowerment programmes and is a grassroot leader who likes to identify with the masses.

Governor Fayose carves the image of "man of the people" and his image makers have not failed to portray him as such. Halting a motorcade in order to have a glass of palm wine with locals and personally conveying old men and women to the bank in order to assist them with opening bank accounts, are some gestures which distinguish Fayose from those predecessors of his who were either perceived as arrogant or distant in the imagination of ordinary people.

In the heat of the ravaging herdsmen killings and violence in the North-Central region, Fayose has deployed a multi-ethnic and multi-religious approach to peace and harmony  in his State.

Fayose is a recipient of the 2006 City People Best Governor in Nigeria and is presently one of the strong pillars of the Peoples Democratic Party.

He is married to Feyisetan (Nee Makinde) and they are blessed with children.
