Dr John Kayode Fayemi is the Governor-elect of Ekiti State. He was declared the winner of the July 14, 2018 Ekiti State Gubernatorial elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission this morning in Ado-Ekiti.
According to the Chief Returning Officer Professor Idowu Olayinka the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Dr Fayemi polled 197,459 votes to defeat his closest rival Professor Kolapo Olushola Eleka of the Peoples Democratic Party who polled 178, 121 votes.
Fayemi clinched from the results announced 13 of the 16 local government areas in the State, while the Professor Olushola won in 3 L.G.As.
The APC candidate who lost the 2014 Gubernatorial elections to the PDP candidate then Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose, is now making a comeback to the Government house, where he led the State from 2010-2014.
With this result the APC has now has the entire South-West zone pending the next Gubernatorial elections in Osun State, later in the year.
Dr Fayemi served as Minister for Solid Minerals of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, until he resigned his position to contest the 2018 Gubernatorial elections.
Election observers in their assessment said the polls was relatively peaceful in terms of the conduct and organization across the polling units in the State, but decried the incidence of vote buying recorded in some areas.
