It was celebration galore in the advertising industry as two of the most prominent practitioners were recently conferred with national honours. This is the first time anyone from the advertising industry will be so honoured. Of the two persons being honoured, only Udeme Ufot is in full advertising practice as at date, and the very first in his generation of practitioners. His recent conferment of the national honour of Member of the order of the Federal Republic (MFR) is a testament to his hardwork and contribution to the marketing communications industry.

Within the advertising industry, he co-founded one of Nigeria’s most successful and respected marketing communications group which has endured and continues as a key player for nearly 25years. From a humble start of 2 bricks and a plank, SO&U group has metamorphosed into a strong brand with the following subsidiaries: SO&U Advertising, Publicis Consultants/Soulcomm, Maximedia and Lucid Audio visuals thereby making it a fully fledged marketing communications group. The Agency has been associated with some of the most outstanding brand building campaigns in Nigeria thus contributing significantly to the growth of the Nigerian economy. Quite a number of the new emerging industry leaders cut their teeth at SO&U.

Within the industry, he has held various offices, leading up to his emergence as the youngest ever President of the association in 1999. He has served several tenures as council member of APCON and chaired a number of subcommittees Of all advertising practitioners, most especially amongst his generation, Udeme’s impact beyond the narrow confines of advertising has been most profound. His contributions to the nation and humanity, most of which have been in non remunerative and sacrificial service has been unequalled.

He has been a director of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group, Nigeria’s leading public/private sector partnership economic think tank for over 7years. He was joint chairman of the organizing committee of Summit 12 in 2006, having worked as a key member of, and later subcommittee chair, in the planning committees of Summits 8, 9, 10 and 11. Board members of NESG sacrifice both time and financial resources in the service of the nation in tandem with the slogan “we pay to serve”.

Udeme has been committed to serve the nation and humanity in his role as a FATE facilitator and mentor to several emerging entrepreneurs, and was honoured as FATE Model Entrepreneur in 2012. He has been on the board of Special Olympics Nigeria for the past 5years as well as on the board of LEAP Africa for the past 3years.

Mr Ufot was also a past President of the Lagos Business School Alumni Association whose tenure witnessed strong rejuvenation of the association and improvements in all key indices of the LBSAA’s performance.

In 2000 he was a member of the publicity subcommittee of the Organising Committee of the 40th Independence celebration set up by the Federal government of Nigeria. The same committee was given the responsibility for planning and executing publicity for the first anniversary of return to civil rule during the Obasanjo government.

Udeme is highly regarded for his professionalism, integrity and passion for excellence. He is also admired for hardwork, tenacity and leadership skills.
