Being text of address by President/CEO, Pearl Awards Nigeria, Mr. Tayo Orekoya, FCA at the 2012 Pearl Awards Nite Press Conference, Lagos

Ladies and Gentlemen,

On behalf of the Board of Governors and Secretariat of the PEARL Awards Nigeria, I have the singular honour of welcoming you all to today’s Press Conference on the 2012 PEARL Awards Nite. You will recall that this will be the second time this year that we would be briefing the Press on our efforts and level of preparations towards the successful hosting of this year’s Awards. Please permit me to start by thanking you for your prompt response to this clarion call to service. We really appreciate you and we will continue to count on your unflinching support and cooperation both now and in the years ahead.

As you may all be aware, the PEARL Awards Nigeria in the last 17 years has organized the Awards Nite as part of efforts to contribute meaningfully to the growth of capital market in Nigeria. We have been guided by principles of transparency and objectivity in our selection process and our scientific approach to select winning companies has made the Awards unique and outstanding.   We are not unaware of the downturn in the capital market in the last few years and concerted efforts being made by regulatory authorities to stabilize the market and return it to the path of sustainable growth.  We fully identify with these initiatives by regulatory authorities and other stakeholders aimed at restoring sanity to the market and boosting investors’ confidence in the stock market.

The Board has again considered the need to identify and reward quoted companies that, in spite of the precarious situation in the capital market and the economy as a whole, have out-performed others. In this regard, I am pleased to announce to you the resolution of the Awards Board of Governors that the 2012 PEARL Awards would hold on Sunday, November 25, 2012 at the prestigious Lagos Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Please permit me to reiterate that the PEARL Awards is the only award in Nigeria and this part of the world that identifies and rewards quoted companies based on verifiable facts and figures. This is the uniqueness of the Awards, which earned it an endorsement in 2003 by the apex capital market regulatory authority, the Securities & Exchange Commission. The Awards process is scientific based on audited reports of companies utilizing credible parameters and tools of data evaluation that meet international standards and are globally acceptable.

Today, the PEARL Awards is widely acknowledged by capital market stakeholders including quoted companies, stockbrokers, Shareholders Associations, among others, for its objectivity over the years.

The 2012 Awards Nite, promises to be much more glamorous than previous editions. The event is being packaged to be a night of excellence and glamour, where captains of commerce and industries and major stakeholders of our economy will savour the joy of excellent operational performance of quoted companies in Nigeria.

Nominees and Winners of this year’s awards have  reasons to be so recognized and rewarded as the facts and figures available at our disposal has shown that quite a good number of companies strategized to improve remarkably on their previous performances . Their strategies have paid off, with some of them emerging winners, resulting in a boost to shareholders wealth, national economic development and the capital market benefitting by being on the path to steady recovery.

I am pleased to announce that after a careful consideration, the PEARL Awards Board of Governors has approved that subsequent editions of the Awards, including the 2012 PEARL Awards will have its Sectoral Leadership Awards category re-classified in accordance with the new segregation of quoted companies on the Stock Market as restructured by the Nigerian Stock Exchange in year 2011 and reflected in the Exchange’s Daily Official Lists.

In this regard, companies will be assessed for Sectoral Awards along with other companies in the new Sectors they now belong under the new Nigerian Stock Exchange structure. To this end, the nomenclatures of Awards in the Sectoral Leadership category have been changed to reflect this new classification. For instance, Sectoral Leadership Award (Banking) and Sectoral Leadership Award (Insurance) have been re-designated Sectoral Leadership Award Financial Services (Banking); Sectoral Leadership Award Financial (Insurance), among a host of other changes in nomenclature; while companies in these new sectors compete for honours in the current sectors.

This year’s Awards were determined utilizing nine performance indices namely Turnover Growth; Return on Equity; Earnings Yield; Share Price Appreciation;  Dividend Cover; Dividend Yield; Net Asset Ratio; Dividend Growth and Profit Margin Ratio.

As in the past, in order to ensure fairness, objectivity and authenticity in its assessment, the Research and collation Sub-Committee, sourced the required data from the Annual Reports of quoted companies duly filed with the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Stock Exchange Daily Official lists for the year under consideration. The Report of the Research & Collation Sub-Committee was reviewed and endorsed by the Board’s Technical Committee, which subsequently presented it to the full Board for consideration and approval.

The 2012 PEARL Awards as usual, would be in three main competitive categories namely the Sectoral Leadership Awards, which rewards a company for out-performing other companies within the same sector, based on aggregate points garnered from all the nine indices utilized for ranking.

The Market Excellence Awards category, which is based on recognition of the entire market leadership in respect of each of the ranking indices, while the third category is the Overall Highest Award category – The PEARL of the Nigerian Stock Market.

I have the honour and privilege to inform you that having examined the reports of the Research & Collation Committee of the Awards Central Working Committee, reviewed and endorsed by the Technical Committee of the Awards Board of Governors and approved by the full Board, I am pleased to announce the nominations for the 2012 PEARL Awards in no particular order.
