Dr. Olusegun Aina OFR, FCIB, consumate banker, community leader, fintech envoy, social entrepreneur, past President of Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and West Africa Bankers Association was on Tuesday 25th July 2017 elected as the pioneer Chairman of the Global Council of Global Banking Education Standards Board (GBEStB).

He had been representing CIBN Nigeria on the 12 nation Task Force setup in 2011 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to midwife the new organisation.The GBESTB was formally inaugurated on 26th April 2017 and election of the leadership took place Tuesday 25th July 2017.

He was elected the pioneer Chair with three Vice Chairs elected from UK, Hongkong and Ghana. The founder member institutions are 26 from 23 countries across all continents and this is expected to grow to not less than 100 countries in the foreseeable future.

The GBESTB, with secretariat in Central London, is an initiative founded by many of the world's leading banking institutes, the major objective of which is to develop clear, internationally agreed standards for the education of professional bankers and enhance ethics and professionalism in banking worldwide.

Dr. Olusegun Aina in his acceptance message noted: “It is not by accident for Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria CIBN to get this global recognition and acknowledgement but a result of the selfless services rendered over the years by the various leaders especially founding Fathers and all Past Presidents without exception”. 

He continued, “this indeed for us is a call to service as CIBN is now in the eyes of the world. By the Grace of God and the support of all, we will excel in the tasks ahead”. 

In appreciation, he said, “thank you for nominating me to serve on the Global Council as representative of CIBN, which provided the platform for my emergence as Chairman of the Global Council, the highest decision making organ of the GBESTB”. 

In his reaction to this milestone achievement, the President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Professor Segun Ajibola, Ph.D, FCIB said, “Many congratulations to CIBN family, home and abroad. It is a call to duty and service. Let us now go and showcase the stuff we are made of with our pool of intellectuals and pace setters. We must make a difference and through Dr. Olusegun Aina change the face of Banking Education globally”.  

The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Mr. ‘Seye Awojobi, FCIB who broke the news of this accomplishment said that, “In actualization of the vision, mandate and strategy plan of our highly revered Institute “to be the global reference point for professionalism and ethics in the banking and finance industry’’, I am glad to announce to you that our Past President Dr. Lawrence Olusegun Aina, OFR, FCIB has been elected as the pioneer Chairman, Global Council of the Global Banking Education Standards Board (GBEStB).”. 

He added, “I also use this medium to congratulate our dear President/Chairman of Council Prof. Segun Ajibola, Ph.D, FCIB and all the Office Holders. It will remain indelible in the annals of our Institute that this great feat was achieved during your tenure.”  

Dr. Olusegun Aina and his team on the Global Council made up of representatives from each of the 26 founder member organisations are expected to lay a very solid foundation for this strategically important global body.
