3.25PM - The @NGRSenate resumed plenary after coming out of an Executive (closed door) Session where the earlier incident of forceful removal of the mace was deliberated upon.
PREVIOUS UPDATE:
Following the developing story that the Mace of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been seized, the Senate has reacted to the incident.
In a press statement signed by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Chairman Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs:
“..some armed hoodlums led by the recently suspended Senator Ovie Omo-Agege walked into the Senate plenary and seized the symbol of authority of the Upper legislative Chamber, the mace”.
According to him “this action is an act of treason, as it is an attempt to overthrow a branch of the Federal Government of Nigeria by force, and it must be treated as such.
All Security agencies must stand on the side of due process and immediately mobilize their personnel to retrieve the mace and apprehend the mastermind and the perpetrators of this act”.
Speaking further he said “this action is also an affront on the legislature, and the leadership of the House has come to express their support against this action”.
The Senate is now in an Executive session at the moment and will give further updates after the closed door session.
The Upper Chamber has given all security agencies including the Department of State Security, 24 hours to recover the mace.
For the period, the Senate is using a substitute mace for its plenary session.
Senator Ovie Omo-Agege who was sighted at the Upper chamber, was recently suspended for 90 days for his allegations that the Senate was working against President Muhammadu Buhari.
