From January 2019 to June 2019, the world has witnessed several elections across the globe from Africa to Europe, South America and even Asia. 

There have been upsets, consolidations for incumbent governments, run-offs and even political deadlocks, which required the constitutional process to resolve. 

The major point is that the electioneering process allows citizens to decide the type of leaders they want in their country. 

This highlights the progress of democracy as a socio-political system. 

One major point unconsidered is the dynamics between an election cycle, the date of the inauguration and the timeline for appointing the cabinet. 

The focus is to underscore how nations and governments position themselves to drive their policies and economies, through the timelines of taking critical decisions.

Senegal the West African nation had elections on February 24, 2019, and the President-elect Mr. Macky Sall who was returning for a second term was inaugurated on April 3, 2019. 

President Sall announced his cabinet five (5) days after to get his government and policies going.


South Africa

South Africa held its general elections on May 8, 2019, and President Cyril Ramaphosa the winner of the elections, was inaugurated on May 25, 2019, and he announced his cabinet four (4) days later.



Nigeria is Africa’s largest democracy and attained another historic elections on February 24, 2019, with incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, who won re-election for a second term. 

President Buhari was inaugurated three months later on May 29, 2019, and two weeks after no major political appointment has been made and even the cabinet announcement is still being awaited.


Guinea Bissau

It was a keenly contested Presidential election in Guinea Bissau, and President Jose Maria Vaz emerged the winner from the May 21st, 2019 polls. 

President Jose Vaz was inaugurated on May 28, 2019, and hinted recently that he would announce the cabinet by June 21, 2019, which is a month from his swearing in.



India practices a cabinet system of government, and after the world’s largest elections were conducted between April 11 to May 19, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emerged the winner for the second term. 

PM Modi was inaugurated on May 30, 2019, and a day after announced the cabinet that will work with him.



In Australia, after a very close and nervy election on May 18, 2019, Mr. Scott Morrison, the incumbent Prime Minister, won a second term to head the Australian government. 

He announced his cabinet on May 26, 2019, three (3) days before his swearing in as the Head of Government on May 29, 2019.



For Ukraine, the comedian  Volodymyr Zelensky caused a major political upset as he defeated incumbent President Petro Poroshenko, on April 21, 2019, Presidential elections. 

President Zelensky was inaugurated on May 20, 2019, and is yet to announce his cabinet at the moment, even though he has given a hint on his special advisers and aides.



Indonesia had its election on April 17, 2019, and after so many controversies and tensions, incumbent President Joko Widodo was declared the winner of the elections on May 21, 2019. 

The elections have been disputed, but at the moment one of the largest economies in the globe is still yet to witness the inauguration of its President and even the announcement of his cabinet.



On March 30, 2019, Presidential Elections Zuzana Caputova emerged the winner of the polls, making history as the first female President of Slovakia. 

She will be inaugurated by June 25, 2019, and by that period it is expected that a cabinet should be announced.

From the Infographics nations like India, Australia and South Africa who are in the top 100 countries, for Doing Business in the globe by World Bank ranking are very business-like in governance and issues like timely appointments. 

Countries like Nigeria, Indonesia and Guinea Bissau have to improve their electoral process and timeline for appointments, which is critical to guarantee an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. 

From the analysis of the nine countries which have conducted elections in the cycle of January to May 29, 2019, Senegal, South Africa, Australia and India showed very seamless approach to the timelines of elections-inauguration of President/Head of Government and Announcement of Cabinet. 

Countries like Nigeria must improve in the area of setting a more efficient timeline of cabinet appointment immediately after the election and inauguration period. 

From the period of the election in February 24th to Inauguration May 29, 2019, it took three months interval, and after the inauguration, it is now two (2) weeks +. 

In 2015, it took about six months for a cabinet the announcement after the inauguration on May 29, 2015; it is hoped that the trend will not repeat itself.
