As news of the death of Nigeria’s Second Republic President from 1979 to 1983 Alhaji Shehu Shagari was announced, President Muhammadu Buhari and other notable leaders in the country, have been paying tributes to the Late Elder Statesman.
President Muhammadu Buhari in his tribute said, “I mourn the departure of a patriot, who served Nigeria with humility, integrity and diligence. Nigerians held him in the highest esteem even when he was out of office, until his demise, and will forever miss his wise counsels”.
Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki in his statement said, “Late President Shagari was a quintessential public servant; having served in seven cabinet positions and as a legislator. He dedicated his best years in the service of our nation and its people”.
House Speaker Rt. Hon Yakubu Dogara described Former President Shagari as a great leader who served Nigeria with dignity and honour, and respected the independence of the legislature.
The Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party and former Vice-President of Nigeria Alhaji Atiku Abubakar eulogized President Shagari as a detribalized Nigerian who served the nation from youth to mature agedness as a teacher & moulder of minds to a leader and builder of a nation.
Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in his tribute described Shagari as a great bridge builder and a patriot who placed service to the nation above personal interest.
Alhaji Shehu Shagari was Nigeria’s First elected Civilian President in the defunct Second republic during the period 1979-1983, and will be remembered for driving economic policies like the Agro-based “Green Revolution”.
President, Shagari’s administration was removed from power through a coup d’etat that saw the return of the military to power.
Shagari hailed from Shagari village in Sokoto State in the North-Western part of the country . He was a proud and distinguished school teacher.
