The flagbearer of the People’s Democratic
Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has tapped Mr. Peter Obi the former Governor of
Anambra State, as his running mate.
Mr Peter Obi who hails from the
South-Eastern region of Nigeria was born on July 19, 1961 and has been credited
with the development of Anambra State, during his tenure as Governor.
Obi who has a mass appeal amongst the
youth in the country, based on his pragmatic and exemplary leadership and
regular sessions and platforms he is featured as a speaker on national issues.
He was the former Chairman of the board of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Nigeria and also Chairman of Fidelity Bank.
This is considered a suave political
move, one that aligns with the geo-political emphasis of the opposition party
whilst resonating with its key message(s) around the economy, business, jobs
and a focus on the Nigerian youth.
Obi brings to the presidential ticket,
his wealth of experience in governance and his prudent management of resources
and is expected to provide a complement to the presidential aspirations of
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; potraying it as one of competent and tested
administrators.
Peter Obi has attended programmes in
prestigious global institutions like Harvard Business School, Lagos Business
School, Kellogg School of Management, London School of Economics, Columbia,
Oxford, and Cambridge University.
He hails from Agulu in Anaocha Local
Government Area of Anambra State and is married with children. See profile

Profile of Peter OBI
Peter Obi was born on July 19, 1961 in
Onitsha, Anambra State. He attended Christ the King College in his hometown to
get his secondary education.
Peter Gregory Obi is the recent past
Governor of Anambra State. While in office, he was appointed by the then
administration as the Chairman Board of Securities and Exchange Commission
(SEC) and Special adviser to the president on Finance.
Upon his graduation from University of
Nigeria, Nsukka, where he studied Philosophy from 1980 to 1984, graduating with
a Bachelor’s degree with honours; Obi sought to hone his entrepreneurial and
managerial competencies by pursuing academic programmes from several
distinguished institutions such as Harvard Business School, Lagos Business
School, Kellogg School of Management, London School of Economics, Columbia,
Oxford, and Cambridge University.
Before Peter Obi’s entrance into
politics, he was notably the Chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc. He also held other
Executive positions in Chams Nigeria PLC, Card centre, Guardian Express
Mortgage Bank, Future View Securities to name a few.
Peter Obi is a recipient of numerous
national awards and recognition as a result of his exemplary tenure as
governor. Some of such achievements include; winning the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation (1 Million dollars) as the best performing state in immunization in
the South-East. With complementary funding from the government, the state was
able to build 10 Maternal and Child Care Centres across the State, particularly
in rural communities, in partnership with the Churches.
Also notable, were some of the efforts
introduced by the administration to turn around the economy of the State, as a
result, a number of companies were encouraged to build their facilities in the
State. Examples of this are the establishment of SABMiller, the 2nd largest
brewery in the world, which built their first Green Field facility in the
State, which is today one of the most successful facilities they operate
globally and INNOSON Motors Manufacturing Company.
He is happily married with two children.
