2019 Lagos Guber Polls: Sanwoolu, Agbaje Debate Economy and Business

Lagos Nigeria’s commercial capital was recently in the spotlight as two leading gubernatorial candidates, Mr Babajide Sanwoolu of the  All Progressives Congress (APC) and Mr Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) engaged in a debate on economic policies.


Hosted by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, LCCI it was an opportunity for both candidates to explain their policies and plans to the business community.


In his opening remark the President of the LCCI Mr Babatunde Runsewe described the private sector interactive sessions, as part of the initiatives of the Chamber to provide a platform that will enable stakeholders understand the policy direction of prominent gubernatorial aspirants.


Mr Babajide Sanwoolu of the APC said if elected into office, he would run an inclusive government for all Lagosians.


Sanwoolu said in his first 60 days he would focus on the following;

  • Solving the traffic challenges of the State
  • Resolving the Apapa Gridlock.
  • Convening a consultative engagement with the private sector.
  • Ensuring a new way of engagement in the public sector, through a town hall type forum with the state civil servants to drive a vibrant state.
  • Running an open and accessible government with a cabinet that is people-driven.


The PDP Candidate Mr Jimi Agbaje said he would work to improve the condition of Lagos by turning it into an economy that works for all Lagosians. 


Agbaje shared with stakeholder the following as the major steps he would take in his first 60 days as Governor:

  • Bringing Character to the leadership of the State.
  • Providing an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive, with friendlier laws.
  • Addressing the issues of Infrastructure
  • Improving the Ease of Doing business index of the state. 


The PDP gubernatorial candidate said his manifesto which is “Re-Anchoring Lagos” is focused on ideas that are bold and people-focused, and will reposition Lagos as a strategic and competitive economy.


Mr Babajide Sanwoolu said his core focus revolves round the “THEME” plan which includes the following areas Traffic management & transportation, Health & environment, Education and technology, Making Lagos a 21st century economy and Entertainment and tourism.


Both candidates agreed that the current Lagos State Employment Trust Fund should be leveraged on and expanded, to empower more Lagosians and MSMEs.
