At a recent forum, Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili, Former Minister of Education in Nigeria, while speaking on the forthcoming 2019 general elections made a strong case for quality leaders to emerge in order to ensure a transformation in the socio-economic landscape of the nation.

In a follow-up, she stated “For too long we left politics to the politicians to determine the outcome. So what citizen are now doing is that we are organizing to say, if the quality of candidate is low: then we are going to get the same bad leadership and poor governance.”

In order to avoid the pitfalls of bad governance, we are presently organizing and mobilizing ourselves. More importantly, it allows us to ensure political parties must search for credible candidate based on the trio of character, capacity and competence that will foster good governance.

Speaking further, she admitted to have made significant progress such that a summit of alternatives, which is aimed at hosting many citizens from different works of life.

With the purpose of saying “we cannot continue with the same kind of low quality of political leadership and still be governed appropriately.”

Dr Ezekwesili hinted on how we can influence the process of finding the kind of alternatives that are credible to governance at local govt, state and federal levels. Not sparing the legislative arm of government from such influence.

She noted, it is a strategic way of citizens saying we are not going to be indifferent, docile, and lethargic. Therefore, we are going to be involved, informed, and also engaged in the political process.

Currently, she is a member of a citizenry advocacy group known as the red card movement. According to her, the red card movement is a platform aimed at putting an end to a failing country and the vicious circle of failed leadership.

In conclusion, Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili stated that red card movement will not hesitate nor be reluctant to give red card to bad leadership, bad governance, and any form of leadership failure. Therefore, it has become necessary that political parties and politicians must consider quality of candidate at every sphere of social political government in order to improve the quality of living of ordinary Nigerians.
