Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (born January 10, 1966) is one of the prominent politicians from the North-Western region of Nigeria, in the fourth republic.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives and current Governor of Sokoto State is a politician and lawyer who played a critical role in the 2015 general elections, with his defection from the ruling party (Peoples Democratic Party) in 2014 as Speaker to the All Progressives Congress.
Tambuwal was one of the major actors in APC’s success in the 2015 general elections and emerged victorious in the Sokoto Gubernatorial elections, experiencing a shift from the National Assembly to the Government House.
He is a graduate of law from the Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto State and had his early education at the Tambuwal Primary School, Tambuwal, Sokoto where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1979.
His college education was at the Government Teachers Training College, Dogon-Daji and obtained his Teacher’s Grade 2 Certificate in 1984.
To boost his capacity in the legal field, Tambuwal attended several courses across the globe which include; Telecoms Regulatory Masterclass, Bath UK (2004), Lawmaking for the Communications sector, BMIT,Johannesburg, South Africa (2004), Regulating a Competitive Industry,Brussels, Belgium(2005), International legislative Drafting,Tulane University(2005), Influence and Negotiation, Stanford Graduate School of Business(2008) amongst others.
He started his political journey working as a Personal Assistant on Legislative Affairs to Senator Abdullahi Wali (1999-2000) who was the Senate leader at the time.
Tambuwal grew into active politics and eventually emerged the House of Representatives member for Kebbe/Tambuwal constituency in 2003.
Since 2003, Tambuwal remained the House of Representative member for his constituency till 2015, under different platforms namely the All Nigeria People Party(ANPP), People’s Democratic Party(PDP) and the All People’s Congress(APC).
The Northern political guru was a member of several Committees in the House of Representatives namely; Communications, Judiciary, Water Resources, Inter-Parliamentary, Rules & Business and Ad-Hoc Committee on Constitutional review.
He Chaired the House Sub-Committee that reviewed the bill to amend the Land Use Act of Nigeria and Adhoc committee that reviewed the report of the controversial power probe committee headed by Hon Ndidi Elumelu.
Other assignments he carried in the House of Representatives was leading the Nigerian delegation to African, Caribbean, Pacific & European Union Parliamentary Assembly (ACP-EU) and serving as the Vice-Chairman, Economic Committee ACP-EU, held in Prague, Czech Republic in April 2009.
As a lawyer he is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Body of Benchers, Nigeria, the American Bar Association and the International Bar Association. In the course of his legal profession, Governor Tambuwal started off as Public Relations Officer of the NBA, Sokoto State chapter between 1996 and 1997. He was a member of the Constitution Review Committee of the NBA (1997–1998). He also served as the Sokoto branch Secretary of the Association (1997–1998) and Assistant National Financial Secretary of the NBA (1998–2000). From 2000 and 2002, he served as the 1st Assistant National Secretary of the Association.
Leading Sokoto State Tambuwal has been credited with his strategic intervention in the education sector, environmental waste management process, partnership with Bank Of Industry on enterprise development, reforms in the healthcare sector (especially Primary Health Care), Civil service reforms and improved workers welfare.
In the area of Infrastructure, he has provided over 800km access roads across the State and for Industrialization is through a PPP arrangement with Hijrah Limited, constructing a new textile factory at Kalambaina.
The Tambuwal administration has established an Industrial cluster for Leather in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Governor Tambuwal also leveraged on the exploration plan of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC) in Northern Nigeria, with the approval for a state-wide
His leadership qualities has endeared many to him and he is being touted as one of the likely Presidential aspirants, that may emerge in 2019 under his Party.
Tambuwal is viewed as a bridge-builder, who believes in building consensus in the Nigerian socio-political space.
He is married and they are blessed with children.
