UK Government Nominates Prof Dapo Akande to Serve On The 2021 International Law Commission

The Government of the United Kingdom recently nominated Professor Dapo Akande to serve in the 2021 International Law Commission for the year 2021.


In a statement issued by the Foreign Secretary of State Mr. Dominic Raab, the UK has a longstanding relationship with the commission and its invaluable work.


Mr. Raab said the UK was a staunch supporter of the commission, which was why it put forward one of its finest legal minds in the person of Prof. Dapo Akande.


According to the UK Foreign Secretary of State, Akande's unparalleled depth and breadth of excellence makes him a true leader in his field.


Speaking further the British Chief Diplomat said "He has a pedigree of professional experience before the world's prominent courts, such as the International Court of Justice and the International Tribunal of the Law and Sea.


Raab added that the Nigerian-born UK legal scholar wrote the "Oxford Guide to International Humanitarian Law" and "Oppenheim's International Law on the United Nations", which has proven his knowledge, experience and the depth and range of his expertise.


The UK Government said it was confident that their nominee will make an absolutely outstanding member of the International Law Commission.


Speaking on his nomination an elated Professor Akande said he was happy to serve in the commission, and have the opportunity of shaping the future of international Law.


Outlining his vision for the International Law Commission he said the focus is on the codification and progressive development international law, and how it cam strengthen the rules on which international cooperation is based. He said through his expertise, he will help to promote a just and peaceful system of international relations.


He is a Professor of International Law at the University of Oxford with over 2 decades experience in the legal profession. Akande has taught and contributed to the academic development of international law in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.


The legal scholar has engaged deeply with a wide range of views from across the world, which has sharpened his own legal thinking and reinforced his appreciation of working collectively.
