The advent of online trading system, no doubt, has changed the experience of stock trading for good and has positioned the Nigerian Capital Market as one of the frontier market that considers the adoption of global best practices as the norm and new normal. In addition, investors are now keen on investing in more securities such as Treasury bills, Bonds, ETFs, Mutual Funds, Derivatives and Currency instead of limiting their portfolio to investments in Equities.
While our H1 2016 and H2 2016 online trading ranking reports focused on Capital Market Operators (CMOs) with portals linked to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) Trading engine - X-Gen, this report focuses on these CMOs as well as FX Trading platforms.
Recent review and findings revealed that more CMOs continue to develop their own online trading portals which enables their individual clients to connect directly to the NSE trading engine and as such can engage in "do it yourself" trading activities.
At a recent investors clinic held at the Nigerian Stock Exchange which was meant to educate stakeholders and the investing community on "The role of Dematerialization, Direct Cash Settlement and E-dividend in the development of the Nigerian Capital Market' contemporary initiatives in the market were discussed to sensitize the investing public and brokerage community.
With full dematerialization achieved and an online trading system existing in the market, it is pertinent to state that the velocity of transfer of transactions will be very high as this initiative among others is considered a confidence boost for market investors.
Furthermore, the participation of Nigerians in the diaspora in the capital market is expected to continue to improve and be sustained as the online trading system has addressed one of their major concerns about investing in the Nigerian capital market
Going forward it is expected that more CMOs and FX trading platforms will embrace an online trading system considering the ratio of active brokerage firms registered in the market to those who have launched an online portal, as well as the continuous sensitization of the exchange through various initiatives, one of which is the annual NSE Market Data Workshop.
