As Nigeria comes under intense pressure to reopen its borders, the Federal Government has listed the conditions for which it will review its policy.

In a recent statement  from the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Geoffrey Onyema, the four (4) steps highlighted that must be addressed include;

  • Goods must meet stipulated packaging standards
  • Rules of Origin Compliance
  • All warehouses around common borders must be dismantled
  • Enforcement of recognized passports as entry documents.

It will be recalled that a circular issued out earlier in the week to all sector commanders in the Nigerian Customs Service, that the  border closure exercise has been extended till January 31st, 2020.

Neighbouring countries who constitute the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS have expressed their concerns over the development.

The Nigerian government has maintained its stance of ensuring that the border is closed to achieve security, stability and the development of the domestic economy.

In its report the International Monetary Fund and World Bank expects a speedy resolution of the border closure, to enable the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement, AFCFTA which Nigeria  is a signatory to.
