The Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), during the week, hosted the maiden edition of its Community of Practice on Gender Issues to entrench gender equality and entrepreneurship.

The summit was well-attended by women, business leaders, entrepreneurs, technocrats, experts and social activists across the country. In giving his welcome address, the  Vice Chairman of the NESG, Mr. Niyi Yusuf, said the body had made progress in championing reforms of the economy in a bid to make it globally competitive economy.

Mr. Yusuf used the occasion to highlight the four roles NESG has played in improving policy action in the country; they include; becoming a dialogue partner,  a watchdog,  a connector and intervener through activities of its policy commissions.

He said the issues of gender-equity across industries cuts across all the NESG policy commissions, and this reinforced the need to establish a Community of Practice to address the challenges.

Addressing issues of a community of practice, Yusuf said,  it involves a group of people across different organizations who share a concern or a passion for a common goal and are prepared to work together to achieve it.

"To promote gender inclusion in Nigeria people, need to be ready and committed to working together," Yusuf said.

He said the community of practice typically possess three crucial characteristics

  • The shared domain of interest/focus area
  • A structured approach for engagement and relationship
  • Communal resources put together for the shared domain

The community of practice, according to him, was focused on gender issues, and the NESG expects that key stakeholders and individuals across private and public sectors will collectively own and champion the issues of gender around women through a structured approach of deliberations and high-level advocacy.

The community of practice is expected to act as a facilitating block to address policy areas regarding women and its transactions with the policy commissions. And to ensure that the key issues affecting women are addressed effectively.

Yusuf also stressed that the community of practice should contain a policy, legislative and environmental charter that can help address and close the gap in terms of gender inclusion.

"It is our firm belief that this gender growth will have input in all the eleven policy commissions of the NESG. And to work with the NESG for the empowerment and inclusion of women in the economic growth of Nigeria," He said.

In her goodwill message, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Nathaniel representing  Women Right Advancement and Protection Alternative, WRAPA said the community of practice is coming at the right time in the country, as it will bring gender issues into mainstream discussion.

Representing the UN Women Mrs. Wenyinmi Omamuli said the prospect of involvement in gender equality is very important. Speaking from research work done by companies such as McKenzie, she said companies with more women in their respective boards perform 34% more effectively in operations.
