NBS Annual Abstract of Statistics 2016

The world as we know it today is driven by an increasing premium on reliable data which constitutes an integral part of policy formulation. Governments across the globe like never, have come to appreciate the undeniable role that reliable data plays in national development. In Nigeria, the case is not different. At the National Bureau of Statistics, which is Nigeria’s custodian of all official statistics on socio-economic and macro-economic indicators, various machinery and tools have been brought to bear in improving the efficiency and reliability of official statistics. 

The Annual Abstract Statistics encapsulates updated information on the Nigerian society. The significance of this publication, its relevance and wide-reaching audience provide stakeholders such as government, academics, researchers and donors with relevant information for policy formulation and informed decision. 

In addition to the data produced by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the publication remains a rich source of statistical information as it also contains data obtained from government ministries, the public sector as well as the private sector.  

The current Annual Abstract of Statistics is the 2016 edition of the series of the publication. In this edition, the data are presented in chronological order of five years with nine basic sections which are divided into twenty-four chapters.  The tables, charts, and graphs provide relevant information that cuts across key sectors of the Nigerian economy. These include Health, Education, Information and Telecommunications Technology, Banking, Insurance, Transportation, Justice and Security, Agriculture among others.   

Furthermore, as with errors that emanate from statistical computations, this publication is a product of data that has been obtained from different sources. It is pertinent to note that the authenticity of the data used during the compilation of this publication was carefully validated to ensure that issues related to errors are brought to the bearest minimum. The data used for this publication were sourced from administrative records, surveys and censuses all of which are subject to errors arising from several factors such as sampling variability, reporting errors for individual units, incomplete coverage, non-response and imputations. 

The publication is available online and in the form of CD-ROM, making it more easily accessible and user-friendly to various stakeholders.  The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) website,, also contains an electronic version of this edition. 

The National Bureau of Statistics wishes to sincerely thank all those who have provided valuable information for the publication of this edition.
