MARCEL OKEKE, a practising Economist, Business and Communications Strategist, until September 2017, served as Chief Economist, Chief Sustainability Officer, Divisional Head of Research & Economic Intelligence Group at Zenith Bank Plc. He also Co-ordinated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) engagements of the Bank. At present, he is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Mascot Consult & Communications Ltd.
Before joining Zenith Bank Plc in 2004 as Senior Economic Strategist, Mr. Okeke has had a multi-sectoral exposure covering the oil and gas industry, media and marketing communications consultancy. He worked with the best-known newspapers in Nigeria, including The Guardian, The Punch, Concord and Champion newspapers. He served at a point, as the Editor of the highly influential 'Business Concord' Newspaper and Business Editor of The Punch.
Mr. Okeke also served as the Divisional Head of Information Management and Media at The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Eastern Division, Port-Harcourt. He was also Team Leader at the African Basic Economy (Consultancy), Lagos.
Prior to his being engaged by the Bank in 2004, Mr. Okeke served as a full time Member of the Editorial Board and In-House Economist of The Guardian Newspapers, Lagos, where he led editorial discourses and analyses on topical local and global economic and financial issues as leader-writer. He equally maintained a very successful weekly column on the economy (every Tuesday). He carried this track record to the bank, where he was Founding Editor of the Bank's upscale journal, Zenith Economic Quarterly (2005-2017), Economic Intelligence Weekly, among other on-line publications.
For his pivotal role in Zenith Bank, he was bestowed with the GMD/Chief Executive Officer Award of the bank in 2006 as the 'Best Individual Staff' in his Group. He is a Senior member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria; Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Consultants (FIMC); Fellow, Chartered Institute of Credit Administrators (FICA); Fellow, Chartered Institute of Portfolio Management (FCPM); Fellow, Chartered Administration Institute (FCAI); Member, Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE); Member, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (MNIPR); Member, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), etc.
Mr. Okeke has travelled widely; and attended professional and executive management programmes at Lagos Business School, London Business School, University of London, among others. He holds a B. Sc. (Honours) degree in Economics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), M.Sc. (Economics) and was honoured as a "Distinguished Economist" by his Alma mater in 2014. He also holds a Master of Business Administration MBA with Finance from the University of Uyo, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State as well as a specialist certificate in Financial Analysis from the Centre for Foreign Journalists, Reston, Virginia, USA, among others. He has at various times served on the Boards of the Digital Bridge Institute, Abuja; Nigeria Internet Group; NEPAD Business Group; Growing Businesses Foundation (GBF); Nigeria Economic Summit Group, Paradise School, Ikota, Lagos, among others.
Mr. Okeke, a versatile public affairs analyst, also serves as a resource person, keynote speaker and course director at the Centre for Financial Journalism, Financial Institutions Training Centre, The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Risk Managers Association of Nigeria (RIMAN), etc.
