From the Editor’s Desk

Operations carried out through the Automated teller machine (ATM) in the second quarter of 2017, stood at N3.42 trillion. This reflective a 1.3% increase in value compared to the previous quarter, as it stood at 3.7% to GDP.

The total value of operations carried out through cheques stood at N6.913 trillion. This is reflective of 2.7% increase compare to the previous quarter, at the same time making up 7% to GDP.  The slight increase in cheque was due to improvement in cash flow position.

Furthermore, the value of payment made through the POS platform and Electronic mobile stood at N320 billion and N295 billion at the end of the second quarter of 2017. We do expect operation through the POS and electronic mobile platform to maintain an uptrend. Largely due to deposit money banks leveraging more on technology in order to be more cost efficient buckled with existing demography that supports a bolstering of e-commerce.

Most importantly, the divergence between volume and value, spotted in mobile payments, underlines the growing cost of active demand due stirred by push factors.
