According to the recently published FMDQ over the counter bulletin, the turnover in fixed instrument for the month of December stood at N4.89 trillion; thus reflecting a 38.9% decrease in the total turnover in fixed instrument compared to the previous month. The fall out was due to the dampening in treasury bills from the tune of N5.33 trillion in December to N4.25 trillion in November, reflective of a 25.5% slip. This shows that the market is reacting to probable circumvent on short term instrument by the fiscal authorities.
Fig 1: Fixed Instrument Traded in 2016 and 2017
The average turnover in fixed instrument for 2017 stood at N5.82 trillion, thereby rising by 32.1% compared to the previous quarter. Such uplift was due to initial strong appetite for short term instrument; however this gradually waned as at the second half of the year. Regardless of the average turnover in Treasury bill, N5.01 trillion (constituting 86.1% of the turnover in fixed instrument) was traded in 2017. Certainly, the recent dampening in appetite threatens the existing convexity.
