From the Editor’s Desk

Currency outside banks at the end of 2016 rose from N1.456 trillion to N1.820 trillion. Thereby reflecting a rise of 23% and 25% compared to the previous quarter. Eventually bolstering the intermediation efficiency ratio from 0.051 t0 0.729 compare to previous periods of downward tilt in the ratio. It is important to highlight that a stronger level of intermediation efficiency ratio will not only be needed to pull the macro end out of a recession but also provide the needed spring board for private capital formation. Evidently the inability to improve private capital and appropriate investment has allowed inflation to be stirred substantially by non –monetary factors.

While the standing lending facility provided by the Apex bank to deposit money bank at the end of the period rose from 11.864 trillion to 13 .007 trillion. Thus reflecting a 9.2% increase in standing facility compared to the previous. The persistent rise in standing lending facility (SLF) by deposit money banks flag the red light of a liquidity squeeze in the system.
