 From the Editor’s Desk

The Federal Government revised its growth outlook downwards for both 2017 and 2018.  The recent growth projections for 2017 and 2018 stands at 1.5% and 3.5% compare to its earlier projections of 2.2% and 4.8%. However, forecasting output achieve the needed tandem between the EGRP and the MTEF in 2019, as growth projections hit 4.5% in 2019, eventually reaching 7% in 2020. The projection suggests that the Federal Government remains resolute on its growth projection but the present trajectory in output has forced a revision on the short term. Certainly, actual inflation is not far off from earlier inflation projection for 2017; moreover the fiscal side is spared the “bygone headache” associated with flawed inflation projections.  Therefore leaving inflation projection unchanged, after all oil prices has become more of a leg wind to the forecast.

In the week ahead, precisely November 7, 2017, the presidency will present the 2018 budget before the legislature. Certainly, we do align with Kenyon Poole that the effectiveness of any stabilization policy depends largely on its fiscal policy. This will also reflect in both an increase in private contribution to gross fixed capital formation and also an improvement in the standard of living.
