From the Editor’s Desk

Certainly, the previous week was one characterised with flurry of economic data, intriguingly all of them were leading indicators; thus providing foresight on the macro picture. One of such was the Capital Importation Report.

The recently published data by the National Bureau of Statistics stated that foreign portfolio investment rose from $2.767 billion in Q3, 2017 to $3.4775 billion in Q4 2017; thereby reflective of a 20.7% increase in foreign portfolio inflow compared with the previous; thus aligning with the boost in autonomous inflow.
In the same vein, foreign direct investment which captures investment in real asset grew from $117.6 million in Q3 2017 to $378 million in Q4 2017.   Other investment rose from $1.2 billion in Q3 2017 from Q3 2017 to $1.5 billion, suggesting a 24% increase in other investment compare to the previous quarter.

Therefore, the total capital importation rose from $4.14 billion in Q3 2017 to $5.28 billion in Q4 2017, reflective of a 27% increase compared to the previous quarter. Evidently, the improvement in capital importation will improve overall external economy as it injects impetus to both financial and goods account. At the same time there is need to double foreign direct investment given its long term effect on output expansion and job creation.
