The most recent monthly economic bulletin of the apex bank showed that claims against the federal government stood at N4.82 trillion, reflective of a 12.3% dip compared to the previous month. The fall in claim against the federal government was a product of 1.6% dip in claims against federal government held by banks. The claims against the federal government to broad money stood at 0.22, while net foreign asset rose from N7.267 trillion to N8.54 trillion, which is reflective of a 17.42% dip in total net foreign asset. The increase is largely attributed to the rise in central bank’s net foreign asset. Even though net foreign asset of commercial banks rose from N75 billion to N302 billion, regardless net foreign asset of banks remain distant- off compare to previous levels in 2014. Overall, net foreign asset to broad money ratio stood at o.38.

On Monday July 24, 2017, the Monetary Policy Committee will have its first meeting in the second half of 2017. The persistent increase in unemployment, especially with youth unemployment standing at 25% coupled with lingering out gap makes it important for the committee to adopt a more multi enforcing approach whereby multiple indicators are being taken into consideration, especially unemployment
