Economic Dashboard

From the Editor’s Desk

The recent 2016 Financial Stability Report released by the Central Bank of Nigeria showed that claims against the Federal Government shot up from N2,893.1 billion in the first half of 2016 to N4,808 billion in the second half of 2016. This represents a 70.9% increase compared to the previous half.

While we are not averse to counter cyclical spending, the trajectory of net claims is rising sporadically. More importantly, we see debt financing as a two way street; while on one street it bridges the gap in financing the budget. On the other street it serves as a medium of replenishing cash, which makes the Money Market more attractive while crowding out Corporate Bond. We thus cannot shy away from the reality that at some point macro adjustment policies will be needed.
