Today, trading activities on the Nigerian bourse sustained uptrend for the third session in a row due to continuous bargain activities just as Medium and Small Cap stocks dominated and contributed immensely to the positive outlook witnessed while market breadth closed impressive as against previous position.
Furthermore, the key benchmark indices maintained upwards movement as bullish sentiments continues, taking supports from Blue Chip, Banking and Insurance stocks while major NSE sectoral indices closed with mixed position as against previous stance.
The continuous bargain activities in Agriculture, Conglomerates, Financial Services, Healthcare, Industrial Goods and Services sectors impacted the outlook recorded today. Meanwhile, moderate selling activities was witnessed in Construction/Real Estate, Consumer Goods, Natural Resources and Oil & Gas sector.
In the same vein, the market capitalization of 186 first-tier equities appreciated by N16.72 billion as market sentiments remained positive. 108 equities were traded today as against previous 89 with more activities recorded in Financial Services, Consumer Goods, Healthcare, Services, Conglomerates, Oil & Gas, Industrial Goods, Agriculture and Construction/Real Estate sectors.
Today, three out of the five NSE sectoral indices closed positive as NSE 30 which basically measures the performance of blue chips maintained uptrend by +0.37%, NSE Oil & Gas closed downbeat by -1.20% as NSE Food & Beverages also closed downtick by -0.40% while NSE Insurance recorded +0.60% gain with NSE Banking recording the highest gain by +1.23%.
At the close of trading session, the NSE All-Share Index inches up by +0.26% to close at 20,492.31 as against an upbeat by +0.14% recorded in the previous session to close at 20,439.25. In the same vein, market capitalization appreciated by N16.72billion (US$111.44million) to close at N6.45trillion (US$43.04billion) as against appreciation by N8.85billion (US$58.99million) recorded in preceding session to close at N6.44trillion (US$42.92billion).
The number of gainers at the close of trading session closed higher at 26 as against 22 recorded in the previous session while decliners closed lower at twenty (20) as against twenty-three (23) losers recorded in the previous trading day – suggesting a positive market breadth.

As usual, Financial Services sector led the market transaction volume today with 223.09 million units valued at N746.30 million (US$4.97 million) exchanged in 2,379 deals as against 300.01 million units valued at N1.75 billion (US$11.71 million) exchanged in 1,874 deals recorded in previous session.
The volume recorded in the sector was driven by transaction in the shares UBA, Diamond Bank, Custodian & Allied Insurance, Continental Reinsurance and First Bank Plc and the total volume of 151.02 million units valued at N396.54 million traded in five stocks accounted for 50.16% of the entire market volume and their value represented 21.15% of the market’s value.
Transaction volume on the exchange moved down by -16.02% to close at 301.12 million units exchanged in 4,104 deals as against a decline by -12.98% recorded in the previous trading to close at 358.55 million units exchanged in 3,446 deals.
Also, market value depreciated by -31.12 to close at N1.87 billion (US$12.49 million) as against appreciation by +15.07% recorded in the previous trading session to close at N2.72 billion (US$18.13 million).
Sectoral Performance (According to New Market Segmentation)
Financial Services sector led the market sectoral performance with 223.09 million units of shares traded in 2,379 trades within the sector, followed by Consumer Goods sector to come second on the chart with 33.00 million units traded in 792 trades while Healthcare sector recorded 16.01 million units in 68 trades to close with third position on the chart. Market Outlook by Classification
At the end of today's session, it was observed that Medium Cap stocks according to new market segmentation topped today's market activity with 58.48% contribution to market turnover, followed by Small Cap stocks with 33.93% while Large Cap stocks stake 7.58% to come last on the chart.
Among the Large cap stocks, DANGCEM, NB and GUARANTY Plc topped the 7 traded stocks in that class while ACCESS, IBTC and WAPCO Plc dominated Medium Cap of 21 traded stocks. Similarly, DANGFLOUR, UBN and GLAXOSMITH led 79 traded stocks in the Small Cap category in that order. See table below
The Agriculture sector closed with one gainer the same market posture recorded in the previous session. PRESCO closed positive by 3.58% after today’s trading session.
The Conglomerates sector closed with one gainer as against two gainers to one loser recorded in the previous session. UACN closed positive by 1.45% after today’s trading session.
The Construction/Real Estate sector closed with one loser as against no price movement recorded in previous session. UAC-PROP closed by -3.36% after today’s trading session.
The Consumer Goods closed with six gainers to five losers compared with three gainers to five losers recorded in previous session. NASCON moved northwards by +4.93% while FLOURMILL moved southwards by -5.00% after today’s trading session.
The Financial Services sector closed with eleven gainers to six losers as against nine gainers to eight losers recorded in the previous session. UBA moved up by +4.55% while GOLDENINSURE moved down by -5.00% after today’s trading session.
The Healthcare sector closed with one gainer to one loser compared the same market outlook recorded in previous session. FIDSON closed positive by 4.62% while MAYBAKER closed negative by 1.82% after today’s trading session.
The Information & Communication Technology sector closed with no price movement the same market outlook recorded in the previous session. All stocks in the sector closed flat after today’s trading session.
The Industrial Goods sector closed with one gainer to one loser as against two gainers to five losers recorded in previous session. BAGCO closed by +4.67% while CCNN closed by -1.08% after today are trading session.
The Natural Resources sector closed with one loser as against no price movement recorded in previous session. ALEX closed by -4.93% after today’s trading session.
The Oil & Gas sector closed with one gainer to four losers as against two gainers to two losers recorded in previous session. ETERNAOIL closed by +4.83% while CONOIL closed by -5.00% after today’s trading session.
The Services sector closed with three gainers to one loser as against two gainers to two losers recorded in the previous session. IKEJAHOTEL closed positive by 4.76% while RTBRISCOE closed negative by 0.83% after today’s trading session.
Further analysis on Acquiring Banks showed that the share prices of Access Bank Plc closed negative with -2.16% as ETI Plc closed positive with +3.54% while FCMB Plc also moved in the same direction with +2.47%.
