Organizations have been tasked with the responsibilities of exploring initiatives that can enhance the future of work, the remote working experience, and also take into consideration building an optimum employee experience. Rosemond Ebe-Arthur, Group Head, Human Capital Management & Development, First Bank  Nigeria made these points during a plenary session in the recently concluded employee engagement and experience conference organized by Financial Institutions Training Centre (FITC).

She said that due to the need for business continuity, businesses globally have made significant adjustments. According to her a recent Mckinsey report surveying over 800 employees, revealed that organizations have stepped up in critical areas during the COVID-19 crisis especially with the quick strategy reviews on what they delivered,  focus on employee-wellbeing, who delivered what, and the communication process to drive engagement.

She added that employee experience is necessary for the global work environment as most employees are in search of great culture, values, leadership, growth and development, and a good network with less attention to monthly income. She added that the relevance of an employee equates to improved engagement which in turn would drive productivity.

Ebe-Arthur emphasized the need for organizations to build on the trust that enabled the shift to remote work in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking further she said that the next normal would require looking at the 4Ws of work; work, worker, workplace, and the world, to take appropriate actions to improve the employee experience and connect the employee to organizational values.

She stated that building an employee experience and satisfaction in the next normal required that companies continually review how workers stay connected at work by understanding the best situation for work from an employee perspective, defining clear policies around new ways of working, communicating, creating opportunities for collaboration between different worker groups irrespective of the workplace and staying ahead of global best practices for work.

In order to foster a sense of belonging to improve organization effectiveness, Ebe-Arthur mentioned that feedback was important, while it was critical to act on the feedback received.

The HR expert further advised that organizations should focus on building a transparent work culture and be specific with roles and job descriptions as it would lead to speed and agility. She also mentioned that there was a need to upskill, reskill, retool as well as build a positive work environment for optimum employee performance.
