The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has called
on all pay-TV subscription broadcasters in Nigeria such as DStv, GOTv, DSTV,
FreeTv and Startimes, among others, to immediately decrypt all the local
channels on their bouquets to allow all citizens access to their services in
Nigeria without hindrances so that they can receive daily reports and updates
on the coronavirus pandemic.
According to a statement released by the NBC, the
directive would initially last for one month, depending on the situation.
The Commission would issue further directives after
more assessments of subsequent developments, it added.
The NBC had earlier instructed broadcast stations to
ensure that timely information and updates are made available on the subject
matter.
The statement further said that even though most
broadcasters rose to the occasion, the Commission expressed dismay that a few
broadcasters had aired fake news and made public the names of persons
supposedly infected by the virus without getting the required permissions.
The Commission mandated Nigeria's broadcasters to
allocate at least 10 percent of their daily airtime to updating the public on
developments around the virus, in line with social responsibility and national
interest, as stipulated in the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
