Guest Profile:
Mr. Nnamdi Nathan Okafor is
the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of May &
Baker Nigeria Plc, a position he was appointed on February 1, 2011. He has led
the company to achieve several distinguishing heights. Top among these
achievements is the attainment of the
World Health Organization (WHO) current Good Manufacturing Certificate (cGMP)
in 2014, one of the few African pharmaceutical manufacturers to attain this
status.
Under Okafor's
management the Joint Venture with
the Federal Government on vaccine production was ratified and the plans to berth Nigeria's locally made
vaccines is now unstoppable. But more importantly, he is driving
May & Baker to become a leading pharmaceutical brand in sub Saharan
Africa, which motivation informed the new vision of the company adopted in
2017.
Okafor was appointed to the Board of May & Baker Nigeria
Plc on the 11th of June 2003, as Executive Director, Sales & Marketing. In
this capacity he restructured the local Pharma business into what remains today
the biggest contributor to the company's revenue and profit achievements by
far. In January 2006, he was appointed the General Manager/Chief Operating
Officer of the Foods Division with the responsibility of championing the
company's diversification into the foods business.
He commenced his career as a medical representative in May
& Baker Nigeria Plc in October 1985. He put up such a superlative
performance in his early years that he became the youngest staff ever to be
promoted to an Area Manager position after just 2 years as a representative. He
continued with this five star performance, winning the best regional
performance award back-to-back on several occasions. This made him rise very
rapidly, leapfrogging his seniors to several key positions including; Training
Manager, National Sales Manager and Head of Sales & Marketing.
Mr. Okafor holds
a second class Honours (upper
division) degree in Pharmacy from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo
University) , 1983 . He went on to bag a
Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Marketing from the Enugu State
University of Technology in 1998 and was in the year 2000 AMP 10 graduating
class of the prestigious Lagos Business School and an alumnus of the Lagos
Business School.
He is an active member of the National Association of
Industrial Pharmacists where he has played many key roles. In recognition of
his numerous contributions to this association he was honoured with Eminent
Persons award in 2007. He is a fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria
(PSN), fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Pharmacy, fellow of the Institute of
Directors, among others. He has traveled widely and has attended several
courses and conferences both locally and abroad. He enjoys traveling, swimming
and tennis and is happily married with children.
