The Statistician General of the federation Dr. Yemi Kale in a Tweet this morning announced the publication of the 2016/2017 National Corruption Survey, the results are as sobering as they are worrisome.

  • Nigerians paid 82 million bribes to public sector officials between June 2015 and June 2016.
  • Almost a third of Nigerian citizens pay bribes when in contact with public officials.
  • Contact rate with public officials is 58%.
  • Per capita number of bribes paid to public officials is 0.9.
  • Average number of bribes paid to public officials is 5.8
  • The prevalence rate of bribes paid within this period was 32.3%
  • The zones that recorded the highest rates of bribes are the North West and the South West.

To think that this huge number of bribery took place in the very first year of the war on corruption shows that deeply enthrenched cultures are not fought with empty sloganeering.
