On the 16th of April, 2020, FintechNGR hosted Social Meet 9.0, a small private session on germane issues of scale and maximizing the potentials of the fintech landscape with her members at the Africa Fintech Foundry, Lagos. The Meet themed; The Making of Indigenous Fintech Unicorns: Nuggets for Scaling focused on conversations around what it takes to build fintech companies that attain such status, especially around grey areas like exit, regulations, growth, as well as the case for indigenous fintech enterprises and challenges around that curve.
FintechNGR's Social Meet is a periodic gathering of its members, professionals, industry leaders and players in the fintech space hosted by the Fintech Association of Nigeria to discuss topical germane issues as it relates to the fintech industry, in a bid to encourage collaboration, drive conversations that can help crack tough walls and also strengthen networking across the different sectors in the space.
At the event 11 new corporate members were inducted namely; Voriancorelli Ltd, FCMB, Chaka, Aluko & Oyebode, FairMoney, Paycom Nigeria Limited (oPay), RegXta, TellerOne Ltd, Mypaywave Technonlogy, Proto and Crediometer.
In his opening remarks, the President of the Fintech Association of Nigeria, Mr. Ade Bajomo, Mr. Ade Bajomo, emphasized the role of fintechs, its innovative approach to solving new problems, the main objectives of the Association and how it works on achieving them through some of its committees- Advocacy, Acceleration, and Network. He also used the gold dust analogy as a reflection of happenings on the Nigerian fintech landscape, and how the space has become a much sought after.
Guest speaker at the event Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim, Former MD, NDIC talked about the wide vista that the fintech space has opened up and how its innovations had provided so much advantages for the Nigerian economy. He reiterated the powerful role fintechs play while talking about the different forms that fintech innovation had taken within the Nigerian space and the resulting positive changes and benefits it could be to the nation as a whole.
Taking the conversation further, there was a panel session featuring Gbenga Agboola, CEO Flutterwave, Musa Itopa Jimoh, Director, Payment Services CBN represented by Mr. Francis Wasa, Deputy Director, Payments CBN, and Mr. Emomotimi Agama, Head, Registration, Exchanges, Market Infrastructure and Innovation, Securities & Exchange Commission, SEC, that examined the ecosystem, case-studies, risk, compliance, policies guiding the space as well as possible routes for charting a more progressive forward thinking sector going forward.
On the overall, FintechNGR's Social Meet 9.0 was a very rich conversation anchored by Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata, a Nigerian Journalist and Television Presenter at Channels TV, as it was an avenue to see a 360 perspective that encompassed regulators, investors and players in the space.
