The  Centre for Social Protection and Policy Studies is pleased to announce that it has won a grant for the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) under the National Research Fund (NRF) Intervention Scheme (TETFund/DR&D/CE/NRF/HSS/14).

Research Team

The research team is led by Prof. Oludiran Akinleye and the grant will run for 24 months. The other members of the research team are Dr Michael Odijie [CSPPS/University College London (UCL)], Dr Gbenga Shadare [CSPPS/University of Sheffield, UK], Dr Olabanji Akinola [CSPPS/Algoma University, Canada] and Prof. Risikat Dauda [CSPPS/University of Lagos].

What the Research Will Examine

The research will examine the implementation and coordination of the African regional free trade/the Common External Tariff (CET), which has been beset with challenges. The new trade agreement provides the foundation for revamping the African Union (AU) brokered Continental Free Trade Area.

Benefits of the Research

The research study will assist researchers and policy makers, including the Nigerian government and the African Union officials, trade representatives and negotiators, and civil social society representatives to better understand how to address the prospective implementation and coordination challenges to the current African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Building on the existing model of integration within regional economic communities (RECs) in Africa, the AfCFTA is planned as a free trade scheme/CET covering the entire African continent and leading to the liberalization of 90% of the trade in goods and services across the continent.

This research will therefore be timely in its primary goal of enhancing the process of creating continental free trade in Africa.
